GIRLS ON THE RUN LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS: The spring season of GOTR begins in two weeks, and we are seeking coaches, running buddies, and sponsors! This program fits perfectly with the Mermaids mission of connecting and supporting girls and women. Please read the following information, and contact Angela Strode at email@example.com or go to www.gotrwesterncolorado.org if you would like to volunteer or donate:
GOTR is part of a national organization that provides an after-school program for elementary- and middle school-aged girls. The program teaches the girls how to be healthy both mentally and physically while also training them for a 5k. Lessons include topics like self-image, leadership, bullying, and cliques. This is not a competitive sports program and the running piece is not meant to produce track stars; instead, the girls are imbued with understanding of how to be active and find enjoyment in exercise. The national average cost to each participant is $165, but we charge only $50 per girl. What’s more, if girls can’t afford the $50, they can opt to pay a $10 scholarship price or nothing at all (over 40% of Garco girls are on scholarship). We never turn participants away due to inability to pay. However, we frequently turn girls away because our program is so full and we cannot find enough coaches to staff our teams! Last fiscal year, GOTR served over 2,000 girls in Western Colorado, including over 300 from Garfield County. This year, Rifle Middle School is already turning girls away for the spring season because the teams are full.
